The Great Collage Comeback!

Welcome to the great collage comeback! I am thrilled to say that I learned the art of collage from Leo Monahan. Here is one of Leo’s collages with a rare authentic signature of simply “Leo,” the only known piece to be signed with his first name only.

I represented Leo from 2014 to 2019, and as part of that work I assisted him with numerous collage workshops called The Unexpected Image. These sought-after workshops were held mostly in his studio although many took place at local galleries, including Grovewood Gallery on the grounds of The Grove Park Inn.

I spent many hours applying the principles so generously shared with me. The artworks on this website have been curated to highlight the possibilities of freedom and the exclamation of the unexpected image. Join me and learn what I learned, including Collage as a Metaphor for Change.

Surely Unexpected Images

Workshops are free-form with few rules and enough structure to set the table for the magic of unexpected images. This piece was created on a day when Nancy was facilitating a workshop and two of the three suggested topics were “Wheels” and “Crow or Bird.”

ASSEMBLAGE (Sounds like COLLAGE)

Art in boxes is a thing. A very cool thing! Leo introduced his workshop participants to the concept of art in boxes and the work of artist Joseph Cornell. The rest of the inspiration for this piece came from the ether and the elements at hand.


TYPOGRAPHY

Focusing on typography is one my the favorite prompts! Working with an emphasis on ‘type’ is just so much fun for me. Maybe it will be fun for you, too!
